Wan Faridah Akmal Jusoh is determined to build scientific and public curiosity in the creatures she finds endlessly fascinating — fireflies. Her own passion was kindled in the final year of her undergraduate studies, launching her into a career exploring the mysteries of the luminous beetles.

Today, Wan is at work building a comprehensive database of the planet’s more than 2,000 firefly species. She is a senior lecturer and researcher at Monash University Malaysia and co-chair of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Firefly Specialist Group.
