Theme: Pandora's Box

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Hi! My name is Mia Cheung and I’m a senior at SASPD. To share a little about me, my hobbies include rugby, softball and reading. I’m especially passionate about poetry, and published my debut book Dandelion Body this past year. It still feels surreal to say that it broke the Top 200 of the Amazon book store and hit #1 in their Contemporary Poetry and Women’s Poetry sections. I will be heading to Harvard this coming fall.

Hello, my name is Nathan Chan, and I’m a sophomore this year. I’m originally from Hong Kong, and also lived in Beijing before moving to Shanghai, and subsequently SAS, in 2016. My passions include basketball, languages, and law. I’m honored to be able to present at this year’s TEDx event, and being 16, I really haven’t decided what I want to with my life per-say, but I have definitely found an interest in disinformation and history. Especially in this era of social media and technology dominating our everyday lives, I constantly find myself believing the wrong things; it took me a second to realize that Magic Johnson wasn’t donating blood in an effort to help COVID (he has AIDS). That’s the small scale stuff, but disinformation has also become a platform for spreading hate and racism. The labels that have been stamped on Asians after the coronavirus outbreak has been hard to watch, but this stereotyping is nothing new.
