We all seek transparency in understanding the pieces of our lives. Whether with our bosses and coworkers or with our family and friends, transparency is often prized above all else as a virtue in relationships, even an essential ingredient for success. We search for transparent and clear relationships between ourselves and the world around us in order to find meaning in our lives as well-adjusted people. It is transparency that allows you to shine a light on your life and to see it clearly for what it is, yet it is also transparency that fools the eye into looking past what you expected to see so clearly.
At TEDxUF 2017, ten speakers will explore the idea of transparency, sharing experiences and new perspectives from a wide range of disciplines and backgrounds. This year we invite you to join us in seeking transparency, in shining a light on the most important questions we currently face.

Andrea Dutton
Dr. Andrea Dutton is an assistant professor in the University of Florida Department of Geological Sciences. Her research focuses on reconstructing sea level during past warm periods. By studying how seas have risen in the past, Dutton aims to better inform us about future sea-level rise. She travels to field sites around the globe to collect data on the rates, magnitude, and timing of past sea level and climate changes. Dutton has recently dedicated time to public officials and science communication to better inform decisions impacted by rising sea levels.Casey Parker
Casey Parker is a graduate student at UF pursuing a Ph.D. in Entomology and Nematology as well as a Master of Public Health. She received her MS in Entomology and Nematology in 2016 where she worked on a new mosquito trap. Her current research involves understanding more about the distribution of the Zika vectors in Florida and their ability to transmit viruses. After obtaining her Ph.D. and MPH, Casey hopes to pursue a career in research where she can become a leader in the field of medical and veterinary entomology.Clay Calvert
Clay Calvert is Professor and Brechner Eminent Scholar in Mass Communication at the University of Florida in Gainesville, where he also directs the Marion B. Brechner First Amendment Project. He teaches both undergraduate and graduate-level courses on communications and media law issues, and he coordinates the joint JD/MA program for the College of Journalism and Communications. Professor Calvert has authored or co-authored more than 130 published law journal articles on freedom of expression-related topics.Diana Moreno
Diana Moreno was born in Quito, Ecuador and moved to Florida with her family in 1999. Her immigrant experience has shaped her academic and professional interests. She received her B.A. in Political Science from the University of Florida in 2011 where she developed her passion for human rights through her involvement in Student/Farmworker Alliance. After working as a labor organizer and human rights monitor, she returned to the University of Florida and earned her Master’s in Latin American Studies in 2016. She now serves as the Assistant Director of Multicultural and Diversity Affairs and the advisor for the Gatorship Leadership and Social Justice retreat. She’s passionate creating an inclusive campus environment that represents and empowers historically underrepresented students. In her spare time Diana loves to teach Zumba, listen to podcasts, and read books written by LGBTQ and/or people of color.Guido Muller
Physics Professor Dr. Guido Mueller is a 20 year member of the LIGO scientific collaboration which made headlines last year when they announced the first direct detection of gravitational waves. The UF LIGO group participated in the design and construction of these detectors. Dr. Mueller’s group provided the largest optical system for LIGO. He also serves on NASA study teams to develop LISA, a future space-based gravitational wave observatory. In his spare time, he likes to walk his dog with his family and play soccer.Iryna Kanishcheva
Iryna Kanishcheva is a well-known figure in the street art world. She was born and raised in Ukraine where she received two master's degrees in Business Management and Pharmaceutical Technologies. Upon moving to the USA, she changed direction, founding and curating the first urban art project in North Florida, 352walls, for which she was awarded the 2015 Public Art Award. She has also established a guide to the street art scene in Gainesville, GNV Urban Art. Iryna is also the Co-Founder and Co-Curator of ArtUnitedUs (Kiev, Ukraine), a project well-known for such significant artworks as the tallest mural in Europe.Joseph Tyndall
Joseph A. Tyndall, MD, MPH is the chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Florida. He is a graduate of the University of Maryland School of Medicine and the Emergency Medicine Residency Program at University of Maryland Medical Center. He has a Masters Degree in Health Policy and Management from Columbia University and is an actively practicing Emergency Physician.LB Hannahs
LB Hannahs is a graduate student in the University of Florida College of Education. LB is an advocate for LGBTQ youth and students whose identities span the spectrum of sexual orientation and gender identity. As Director of LGBTQ Affairs at the University of Florida, LB worked extensively with university students and co-ran a program called Gatorship, which trains students to facilitate social justice retreats on campus. LB also co-founded Gainesville Equality Youth, a local LGBTQ alliance.Ryan Duffy
Dr. Ryan Duffy is a University of Florida Research Foundation Professor in the Department of Psychology and the Training Director of the Counseling Psychology Program. He mainly studies the connection between work and well-being and has published more than 90 articles in this area. Ryan also teaches two large undergraduate courses: Positive Psychology: The Science of Happiness and What is the Good Life? He dreams about having interesting and exciting leisure interests but mainly spends his free time watching television and having excessively long conversations about interpersonal relationships and what makes life happy.Organizing team
