What can we change? Do we have the power to make a stand today for a different tomorrow? One full-day of brilliant speeches and interactions with more than 15 exquisite speakers and performers. 700 thinkers and doers, from all walks of life. The 22nd of November was the day of the 6th edition of TEDxBucharest, where we took a glimpse into the future.

Jazzappella

Sillyconductor

Sound designer, field recordist and sonic speed addict based in Bucharest, Sillyconductor has written music for mute films, animations, fashion shows and dance performances and created sound installations/objects for countless festivals and exhibitions in Norway, Spain, Germany, Italy, UK, US and further on. Among other things, he forced 100 maneki-neko cats to emulate Ligeti’s metronome extravaganza, helped build a software that generates 60 soundtracks per second, played USB fans, adapted urban folklore to microtonal pianos and conducted an earthquake.

Adrian Pop

Architect | Center for Sustainability in the Built Environment | Adrian is the initiator of the Annual Competition for Architectural Students and a member of the PRISPA team, a project presented before at TEDxBucharest. After the PRISPA project, he continued to investigate sustainability by designing and constructing an educational and vocational centre for a community in Boldesti-Scaieni.

Alex Lungu

Alex Lungu | Founder of Copy-Me | www.copy-me.org | Alex does video work. He loves to recombine things, and just like in editing, he really enjoys the power of a good remix. He sometimes acts on what the little troll in his ear tells him to do and uses those video skills to talk about issues close to his heart. Copyright, open culture, the myths of copying and copyright, all through the animated web series called Copy-Me, which he started.

Alex May

Alex May | Visiting Research Fellow: Artist in Residence | University of Hertfordshire | www.alexmayarts.co.uk | Alex May is a digital artist and Visiting Research Fellow: Artist in Residence with the computer science department of University of Hertfordshire and a Digital Media Arts MA sessional lecturer at the University of Brighton. He has performed art at Tate Modern and Watermans, and exhibited internationally including at the Science Gallery in Dublin, the Rockefeller Arts Center at State University of New York, and the Grande Halle de la Villette in Paris.

Anna Dumitriu

Anna Dumitriu | Bio-Artist | The Institute of Unnecessary Research | www.annadumitriu.co.uk | Anna Dumitriu’s work blurs the boundaries between art and science with a strong interest in the ethical issues raised by emerging technologies. Her installations, interventions and performances use a range of digital, biological and traditional media including live bacteria, robotics, interactive media, and textiles. Dumitriu is known for her work as founder and director of “The Institute of Unnecessary Research”, a group of artists and scientists whose work crosses disciplinary boundaries and critiques contemporary research practice.

Antonella Broglia

Antonella Broglia | TEDx Madrid Organizer | Ashoka Spain Ambassador | After working for 30 years in marketing and advertising and occupying the role of CEO for both Ogilvy&Mather Rome and Saatchi&Saatchi Madrid, Antonella focused on her passions for innovation and technology. Currently, as an Ashoka Ambassador, she sustains entrepreneurs who aim to improve society through large scale innovations. She is also a Consultant at Infonomia, a famous Spanish think tank where she studies the impact of new technologies and scientific discoveries in business.

Charlie Ottley

Producer | Wild Carpathia series | Over the last five years Charlie has come to know and love Romania, through his work as the writer and presenter of Wild Carpathia, a programme which was acclaimed for celebrating the beauty of the Romanian wilderness and promoting its huge potential as a tourist destination while at the same time highlighting the threat to rural areas from deforestation and reckless development. He is currently working to ensure environmental education becomes an integral part of the school syllabus for every school in Romania.

Daniel Marcu

Daniel Marcu | Director of Strategic Initiatives | Information Sciences Institute | University of Southern California | Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence and start-ups are just a few of Daniel’s top skills and interests. Currently a Director of Strategic Initiatives at ISI, USC, he is also a successful entrepreneur. He is the co-founder of Language Weaver, a pioneer and world leader in statistical machine translation, used by some of the most powerful companies. The aim of the software is to translate large volumes of information in a secure and accurate manner.

Florin Stanciu

Florin Stanciu | Forensics DNA Expert | National Forensic Science Institute | www.golem14.com | After receiving his PhD in Human Genetics, Florin is now involved in an experimental study of the Romanian DNA in collaboration with a university in Italy. He also gets involved in research projects and teaching activities at the Department of Human Genetics from the Faculty of Biology, University of Bucharest. With an interest in Science Fiction, Florin is also a member of the Romanian Science Fiction & Fantasy Society and editor at Fantastica.

Georgiana Manaila

Singer & artist | Georgiana Manaila is a young musician, an exceptional interpreter and fervent ambassador of Romanian folklore. She studied music for 12 years and is now undergoing medical studies at UMF Carol Davila. It was passion that drove her to give up studying piano over folklore and family who determined her to go to Medical School. Though at times she finds it difficult to stay motivated, Georgiana is convinced she will continue with both music and medicine.

Ioana Pelehatai

Ioana Pelehatai | Copy-Me | Co-Founder & Curator | www.copy-me.org | Ioana Pelehatăi is co-founder of Copy-me, a platform about the sharing of knowledge and culture, about laws, myths and misconceptions, about the Internet and the wide spread of information and, of course, about all the benefits of sharing. Copy-me is also the title of an animated web series, dedicated to debunking the myths of copying. Passionate about copy-writing and social media, Ioana is currently writing for Sub25 Online Magazine.

Ioana Calen

Ioana Calen | Founder & Managing Partner | Modulab | www.modulab.ro | With a background in philosophy, journalism and consultancy for a neuromarketing laboratory, Ioana now encompasses the roles of curator, cross-cultural bounty hunter and communication interface for Modulab, a multi-disciplinary platform that promotes research and development of new means of expressivity through technology. The first holographic projection in the world & first haptic multi-touch screen are only a few of the platforms’ achievements.

Ioana Cozmuta

Ioana Cozmuta | Innovative Strategies Lead at NASA Ames Research Center | A PhD in Physics from the University of Groningen and positions as a research scientist at Caltech and Stanford University enabled Ioana to join NASA. Here, she uses Innovative Strategies to provide Leadership to the NASA Space Portal and the Emerging Space Office to identify and articulate the economic and humanitarian potential and benefits of commercial micro-gravity applications on the International Space Station and other commercial carriers for the future development of a flourishing economy in low-earth orbit.

Marcus Orlovsky

Marcus Orlovsky | Director | Bryanston Square | Marcus has been working in the field of education for nearly thirty years, journeying through real estate and tech as ‘real jobs’ whilst working with educational charities and Universities, before co founding Bryanston Square. Marcus and his team work throughout the UK and beyond. Known for creating great spaces at lower than expected costs and helping schools generate revenues, they are increasingly seen as ideas and inspiration generators: from running challenge days to summer schools through INSET days, all of this generally raise aspirations and lift spirits.

Perry Timms is known as a playful, passionate and engaging speaker, who delivers talks about the role of social media within the workplace and gives insight into the future of HR, across the UK and internationally. He is the CIPD adviser on Social Media and Engagement and Visiting Fellow at Sheffield Hallam Business School. With over 20 years of experience in business change & technology, organisational development and talent, Perry founded PTHR in 2012, aiming to change the world of work one conversation at a time.

Rick Falkvinge

Rick Falkvinge | Political Evangelist | Founder of the Swedish Pirate Party | www.falkvinge.net | An entrepreneur from the age of 16, Rick is the Founder of the first Pirate Party. Under his leadership, the Party had a resounding success at the 2009 European Elections, with two elected representatives. He is now a political evangelist for his ideas on freedom of speech and expression. While Foreign Policy Magazine named Rick a Top Global Thinker, TIME Magazine shortlisted him as one of the world’s most influential people.

Stefania Druga

Stefania Druga | Founder | HacKIDemia | www.hackidemia.com | Ştefania is founder of HacKIDemia and Afrimakers, former Googler and graduate from an international Erasmus Mundus master of Media Engineering for Education (France, Spain, Portugal). In the summer of 2012 was also the Education Teaching Fellow at Singularity University at NASA where she advised and coached 80 students from 36 countries. In the past 3 months she travelled in 8 African countries and trained local teams of makers to design and create hands-on projects that could solve local challenges like access to electricity, clean water, health.

Theodor Paleologu

Theodor Paleologu | Professor | Casa Paleologu | www.paleologu.com | Theodor Paleologu is the founder of Casa Paleologu, an independent school of liberal arts for adult learners. He graduated from the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris and earned a BA and a MA in Philosophy from the University Paris I Sorbonne and a PhD in Political Theory from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales. Fellow at Harvard, Notre Dame and Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin, he taught a Bard College Berlin, Boston College, Deep Springs College and Copenhagen University. He was Ambassador of Romania to Copenhagen and Minister of Culture. He is currently Member of Parliament.

Vlad Mixich

Vlad Mixich | Journalist | Hotnews.ro | An MD who transformed his passion into a way of life, Vlad Mixich is a full-time journalist for HotNews.ro, an influential news website in Romania. He is the recipient of several international fellowships, being in the present an Eisenhower Fellow for Innovation. In a world where communication evolved so much, he is trying to find a cure for the disrupted way in which we are sharing information about our health.
