This year, Reimagine: Same Photo, Different Lens celebrates dismantling ages-old problems from new directions and shattering outdated stigmas with fresh perspectives. As society revisits lost history, renews our promise to nature, and reinvigorates discovery in science and technology, we’re ready to tackle humanity’s timeless problems with new insights and inventions. To reimagine is to change angles, try different lenses, and explore unfamiliar interpretations. To reimagine is to unlock potential and reveal ingenuity.

David Lim

Student

Meet David Lim, a Grade 11 student from Abbey Park High School! He will be speaking about the impacts of AI on creativity. David’s greatest inspiration is from the new technology that has been created in today’s world, including artificial intelligence, robotics, virtual reality, and more. David is very passionate about community fundraisers such as Relay for Life and his very own environmental plant fundraiser at Abbey Park! He has showcased this through his role as lead organizer for Abbey Park’s Eureka! Hackathon. He takes interest in understanding the world around him and learning more about himself, as it motivates him to step outside of his comfort zone. In the future, he wants to use his passion for software engineering to create a positive impact on society. He believes that everyone has a responsibility to use their talents and resources to create a positive difference in the world.

Julia Hong

Julia Hong is a Grade 10 student at Abbey Park High School! Julia will be talking about how the concept of luck ties into success. Julia is inspired by not only imaginative stories, which help her to work towards her visions, but also her number one role model, Maya Angelou. Angelou’s relentless spirit inspires Julia to re-energize and keep going. Julia hopes that her audience walks away from her talk with a new perception of what luck is and how it is different from the way it is viewed by society. She will introduce and enforce a new idea to help her audience have a new understanding of how luck is a choice. Julia is very passionate about writing, which has led to her involvement in Abbey Park’s magazine club, Eagle Ink. She is also passionate about business and hopes to embrace this passion and turn it into a career eventually. Be sure to come listen to Julia speak next month!

Kareena Saggar

Student

Kareena Saggar is Grade 11 student at Abbey Park High School who will be talking about social identity, a topic she finds important and very close to her heart. Kareena hopes that her audience will hear and implement her presented solutions to keep our culture diverse, that audience that feels as if they can't connect with their heritage gets some peace of mind, and that people who demean others because of someone's lack of culture learn that there are consequences to their actions. She hopes to become a lawyer one day, working to help people. She wants to work in a company that gives her the opportunity to make changes in the world. Kareena is very involved in school with extracurriculars such as the South Asian Student Association, DECA, holding an executive role in Eagle Ink, and more! She is also the Personnel Manager of the Oakville Symphony Youth Orchestra, outside of school.

Rida Salahuddin

Student

Meet Rida Salahuddin, a Grade 11 student at Iroquois Ridge High School! She will be discussing fast fashion and hopes to inspire the audience to take action regarding this matter. Rida’s mentor and close friend, Aki Tanaka, is an inspiration to her as she is very hard-working, dedicated, and a very caring person. Aki welcomed Rida with open arms when they first met at a climate protest in 2019 and continues to be an inspiration for her to this day. Rida wanted an opportunity to show people what fast fashion means to the world. She is a very active member of the Halton community. She is a leader with the Seeds of Leadership, where she leads various projects to benefit those in need. For example, she led a project called Patched Up, where she and her team collected and donated over 500 pounds of clothing. Rida also enjoys photography, which she was able to explore through Shoot for Peace, an organization that allows youth to broaden their lens and showcase their art.

Ruhaan Mahanta

Meet Ruhaan Mahanta, a Grade 8 student at Maple Grove Public School! He will be speaking about the concept of positive disagreements. He hopes the listeners of his talk realize that disagreements and conflict can ultimately result in something constructive, whether it be by reaching a mutual agreement or by learning something new. Ruhaan is highly passionate about his leadership abilities which he applies when he frequently mentors and teaches children at a martial arts school. He is also very enthusiastic about his artistic abilities and loves creating things. Being a member of the graduating committee and the school's assembly team are just a few of his artistic endeavors. He isn't sure yet about what career he wants to pursue in the future, but he hopes that it'll be something that involves helping and impacting others.

Shirley Yang

Meet Shirley Yang, a Grade 9 student at Abbey Park High School! She will be discussing the decision-making process and how it can connect to the way we understand others and ourselves. Salman Khan, the founder of Khan Academy and an active figure in education, is a great role model for Shirley. Although she is greatly inspired by his professional success in providing access to educational sources for millions, Shirley finds his personal story quite remarkable. His story of becoming successful when coming from a household where he faced many obstacles is also quite similar to the challenges that Shirley has faced. Shirley believes she has something valuable to share with the people around her and is extremely passionate about making a difference and challenging herself to grow as a public speaker. She hopes the audience will learn to recognize and listen to the perspective of others and understand how being compassionate and informed is greatly beneficial.
