In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Carly Ellman

Carly Ellman, MSW, LCSW, received her master’s in social work (MSW) from Fordham University and is a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) in the states of Pennsylvania and Florida. Carly is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine(GCSOM), and was previously an assistant professor of social work at Misericordia University. At Geisinger she is the Director of the Family Centered Experience and co-leader of Interprofessional education. She has taught at Fordham University’s Graduate School of Social Service and Tulane University School of Social Work. Mrs. Ellman embedded service learning into all her classes and is dedicated to continuing to work together with the community in and out of the classroom. Currently, she maintains a private practice in Dallas and Ambler PA, where she specializes in working with adolescents and couples. Carly is working on her PhD in Strategic Leadership and Administrative Studies and hopes to continue her research in the area of Interprofessional Education, bioethics and experiential learning. Carly is married to her wonderful husband Joe and has two daughters Gianna 5 and Aubrey 3.

Eshiemomoh Osilama

Eshiemomoh Osilama is a current first year medical student at GCSOM. He was born in Nigeria and raised in the Boston-area. He graduated from Columbia University in 2016 with a major in Biology. Prior to matriculating into the MD program, Momoh completed his Master's in Biomedical Sciences at GCSOM in 2019. Momoh aspires to be an avid writer and is, admittedly, hyper-particular about the way he uses words.

Ian McCoog

Dr. Ian J. McCoog is an Assistant Professor of Medical Education at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine. Dr. McCoog is a noted researcher and speaker in the areas of 21st century skills, humanities education, and instructional technology.

Michael Sulzinski

Michael Sulzinski was born and raised in Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania, and he earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Pennsylvania State University and Ph.D. from Cornell University. After receiving his doctoral degree, he worked for five years in the pharmaceutical/DNA diagnostics industry on poliovirus, herpesvirus, HIV and Chlamydia trachomatis. Ten years out of college, he discovered his true passion, teaching, when he joined the faculty at the University of Scranton. For the past 25 years, he also practiced as an expert witness in infectious disease for civil and patent litigation. In 2019, Dr. Sulzinski joined the faculty at GCSOM as Professor of Immunology and Microbiology.

Mindy Gruzin

Mindy Gruzin is a medical student at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine with goals of becoming a primary care physician. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Penn State York and spent ten years as a medical assistant before realizing her dream of going to medical school. She is a self-proclaimed “resiliency advocate” and has been mentoring underclassmen and disadvantaged youth through various charitable organizations such as the YWCA for almost a decade, hoping to nurture courage and curiosity in kids of all ages.

Sean Alventosa

Sean Alventosa is a first year medical student at GCSOM. He grew up in Setauket, New York and graduated from Cornell University in May of 2018 with a major in Industrial and Labor Relations. During his gap years, Sean worked as a medical scribe for ScribeAmerica, volunteered at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, and became certified as an EMT. Sean is passionate about becoming a primary care physician in underserved Hispanic/Latino communities. In his free time, he loves to read, exercise, and play piano.

Tice Harkins

Tice Harkins is a first year medical student at GCSOM. He attended The Pennsylvania State University for his undergraduate education. He has presented his research in the USA, Poland, Ireland, and New Zealand. He enjoys training for triathlons and reading in his spare time.
