Theme: “Han iyo Hayaan” Inspirations Journey

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Abdullahi Hajji

Teacher and education activist

Abdullahi Hajri is a teacher and activist for poor children's education, particularly children of IDPs families. Abdullahi was one of a student in the internally displaced camps in Puntland who got opportunity to study, and lastly finished the university. After the graduation he decided to bring his knowledge back to the children who do not get education opportunity in IDP camps. now he is an activist and teacher live in Puntland.

Deqa Mohamud

Environmental Activist

Deeqa Mohamud, Somali diaspora, is an environmental activist who dedicated her work to protect and preserve the environment. Deeqa is the founder and Director of Dirie Foundation, a plastic bottles recycling foundation aiming to re-use plastics in an environmental friendly way. She currently lives in Garowe and previously worked as community development advisor and trainer for more than 17 years in London, the UK. Deeqa studied Science and majored in Languages.

Ismail Weirah

Digital Entrepreneur

Ismail Weirah, is an entrepreneur with a passion for using digital technology to change the status quo in Somalia. For 9 years, he was the deputy managing director of the company and during this time he worked with international organizations such as UNDP, UNICEF, UNOPS, Africa Oil Company, Horn Relief, Care International, ICRC and relevant Puntland government institutions. Aimed at increasing the level of adaptability and accessibility to digital technologies and tech based training and education in Somalia, he founded, Weirah Digital Technologies which is a tech company based in Garowe Puntland Somalia. Ismail will be speaking at Tedx Garowe on digital entrepreneurship and how it can be mainstream into business startups in the state.

Mahad Said

Free-lancer scholar and Author

Mahad is a free-lanced scholar experienced in natural resources, history and the biodiversity in Somalia. An author of books, published articles and papers on environment and climate related issues, he particularly focuses in his research on indigenous species of Somalia. Mahad is also a historian with extensive knowledge of Somalia’s ancient caves and tourist destinations. In his talk at Tedx Garowe, he will address history of ancient Caves in Puntland.

Yusra Momahed

Doctor and University Lecturer

Dr. Yusra Mohamed Yassin is a medical doctor and practitioner at General Hospital of Garowe with MBBS and a master in health service management. Dr. Yusra is a Reproductive health and women activist where she advocates against discrimination, stigma, restrictive laws and policies, and entrenched traditions around women reproductive health rights by providing adequate knowledge and skills to both nurses and midwives. Dr. Yusra is also a part time university lecturer.
