In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

The temptation to say and do what’s popular instead of what you believe in is strong. Andrew Judd knows only too well this battle. Having served nine years at New Plymouth District Council with the last three of those as Mayor, forced him to take a long hard look in the mirror and ask some hard questions. Today, after this journey into self-awareness, he stands for justice and peace and continues to challenge systems that marginalise and isolate.

He currently spends his time between running his entertainment company and organising global retreats for entrepreneurs and has helped dozens create their own businesses over the past three years. This kiwi lad from Christchurch is living his best life.

Michael Peters

I think, therefore I am. I drink, therefore I am. Professor Michael A. Peters has spent many an evening pondering the importance of philosophy for everyday life over a glass of vino or two. A Professor of Education at the University of Waikato and Emeritus Professor in educational policy, organisation, and leadership at the University of Illinois, Professor Peters also used to own a vineyard. “I like the connection between wine and philosophy.” With two honorary doctorates, over eighty books and five hundred papers and chapters to his name, his interests are in education, philosophy, social policy and particularly knowledge production and consumption. His latest research focuses on distributed knowledge, learning and publishing systems, and open education.

A strategic communications and technology professional with a background in the future of food and agriculture, cleantech, energy and transportation, Rosie is passionate about sustainability and the environment. With a PHD in disruptive technologies for sustainable development, Rosie has an appetite for finding ways to improve sustainability and resilience for agricultural and food systems in New Zealand and gobally. She monitors global industry technology and innovation trends in order to educate and future proof their impact on our economy. But Associate Professor Ryan Ko knows just how easy it is to lose control over our data once we press that upload or share button. A cyber-crime fighter leading the research game in New Zealand - although he might describe himself more modestly as a computer scientist - Ryan has been awarded three international patents in cyber security. So, you could say he knows his stuff when it comes to digital security.

A design thinking facilitator and marketing manager, by day Tania works in a dynamic tech company powering film festivals around the globe and in her free time works with organisations to help them solve complex issues using a ‘design thinking’ approach. “Design thinking is where you put the customer or user of a product or service into the heart of everything and as a result you end up with solutions that better meet their needs.” She recently worked with Waikato University business students. sharing her knowledge of the DT process to develop ideas and solutions on how to support former refugees to flourish in Waikato.”

Starting his career as a physiotherapist but relentlessly driven by new challenges, Victor Ahipene decided to move on from a life of 9-5. Motivated by the entrepreneurial spirit,Victor left his job to develop his growing passion – entrepreneurship. Working in a space that demanded confidence and action, he quickly learned that education took second place to the knowledge gained from real-life experience. Having grown up in an environment of hardship, with financial struggles part of daily life, Victor learnt valuable lessons about creating change and building resilience. This resilience became important as Victor transitioned from the security of his job, into self-employment.
